Please see message below encouraging students from any college/university to attend a "Breaking Down Barriers Conference" on November 1, 2003 at the Bahen Centre at the University of Toronto. OAD, encourages Deaf students to attend this conference. This is your opportunity to share your experience as to whether you feel you have received accessible services. For example are interpreters readily available? Are your interpreters qualified to interpret? Are interpreters provided for full time? Are notetakers provided? Are the notetakers qualified? Are interpreters provided during meetings with your professor? Are interpreters provided during student activities? If you have answered no or somewhat to these questions then you should consider attending the conference. OAD has written to the government for the past 8 years to improve interpreting services in Post-Secondary Education. We have asked that standards be set in order to review and hire qualified interpreters who have completed all of the requirements to become interpreters. At present time many colleges/universities do not hire qualified interpreters. Some have just completed their basic signing course ASL level 1 and/or level two and feel this is enough. We (OAD) encourage Deaf students to attend this conference. Making changes not only improves accessibility for yourselves but for other Deaf students who may not feel comfortable standing up to express their needs. You can make a difference in one's life to improving services. Please do not hesitate to contact us at OAD e-mail oad@on.aibn.com if you wish to receive materials to share at this conference to removing barriers faced by Deaf people in Post-Secondary Programs. Sincerely, Chris Kenopic Ontario Association of the Deaf |
