Deaf Empowerment Program

The Deaf Empowerment Program is the "deaf stream" of the provincially funded Literacy and Basic Skills Program. It includes reading, writing, mathematics, basic computer and employability skills taught in ASL and in an individualized and "Learning Outcomes" based approach.
Reporting to the Manager, Access Programs, and working closely with the Academic Co-ordinator of the Deaf Empowerment Program (DEP), the successful applicant will be teaching to deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing adults in a barrier free and learner centred environment.
The duties of the position include:
- teaching one-on-one, to small groups, or a class
- learner orientation, assessment, goal setting, and "Learning Plan" development
- researching and developing teaching material, preparing individualized lesson plans
- learner recruitment and community involvement
- participating in local and provincial workshops, PD, meetings, and special projects
The successful applicant must:
- have relevant qualifications and several years working experience teaching literacy/numeracy to deaf/deaf-blind adults
- be fluent in ASL
- possess solid computer knowledge and experience
- be thoroughly familiar with deaf culture and issues and the wider deaf community
- hold a valid driver's licence
- demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and problem solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as a team member
The preferred candidate is familiar with the Hamilton-Wentworth/Brantford communities and knowledgeable of LBS. He/she must be able to remain calm and friendly in an emotionally demanding and stressful teaching environment.
The minimum salary for this position is $98.72 per day
